It usually refers to DBS and pumps. DBS stands for deep brain stimulation, which involves electrodes being surgically implanted in the brain. Pump therapy involves continuous treatment with apomorphine or levodopa via a portable pump. Microtablets (sold under the brand name Flexilev) are sometimes also classified as advanced treatments, partly because they are administered using a dosing device and partly because this treatment is only subsidised for people who would otherwise require a pump. In English, the term ‘device-aided treatments’ is often used to distinguish these from ‘conventional’ medicines. /Dag Nyholm
