In many cases, you are free to choose the one you think suits you best – we usually show you the different pumps and go through how the pump and tubing work in everyday life. Sometimes, you may have experienced certain side effects in the past that mean one or more options are not suitable. At present (September 2023), there are three different pump treatments available in Sweden: one is apomorphine, which is administered via a small plastic cannula into the subcutaneous fat, but which usually needs to be combined with L-dopa tablets. The other two are L-dopa pumps administered via a tube into the stomach; Duodopa contains exactly the same active ingredients as Sinemet, whilst Lecigon is the same as Stalevo, but in liquid form. All pumps work in the same way, delivering small doses continuously, but they look different and vary in size. An L-dopa pump is expected to come onto the market within a few months; it is called Produodopa and contains the active ingredients for the same medicines found in Duodopa/Sinemet, but it is administered via the subcutaneous tissue. /Dag Nyholm
