There is evidence of an inflammatory process in the brain, which is generally considered to be a consequence of the disease process and, more rarely, a primary cause of the disease. Many studies have been conducted to try to influence and slow down inflammatory reactions in Parkinson’s disease, but all have been unsuccessful, and there are currently no agents capable of influencing inflammatory processes that have been shown to slow the progression of the disease. Several studies are currently underway using various agents, which may lead to future treatments, but none are currently available or due to be introduced into clinical practice./Håkan Widner
