I have had Parkinson’s for almost 15 years. I have had DBS since 2021, which works very well. I have been experiencing increasing problems with watery eyes; is this linked to Parkinson’s and is there any help available? There’s no end to the flow of tears; they run constantly, especially from one eye and even my nose! It’s a real hassle always having to wipe away the tears and keep them at bay. My vision is also getting worse, and I can’t see anything when I look down, for example into my bag. Many people think I’m crying and feeling sad, which can get a bit silly. It gets worse outdoors, but they run non-stop indoors too

Watery eyes are probably not linked to Parkinson’s but may, for example, be due to the tear ducts from the eyelids to the nose being blocked. The phenomenon is common. It may possibly be due to a reduced blink rate in Parkinson’s, which actually causes dry eyes and thus stimulates extra tear production. But from your description, it sounds as though they are running ‘non-stop’, which does contradict the theory of dry eyes. Please consult your GP or an ophthalmologist for an assessment. There are certain medications that reduce tear production, known as anticholinergic agents, but these can have other side effects and should therefore be tried with some caution. /Dag Nyholm
